F1® will stay in Mexico City until 2022

08 August 2019  12:39 PM

·       An agreement has been signed allowing Formula 1® to stay in Mexico City for three more years – from 2020 to 2022.

·       This contract extension is possible thanks to the work of the Mayor of Mexico City, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum, and her team who promoted the creation of a trust, conformed by a group of committed businessmen, that will complete the investment needed for the event.

After months of close collaboration, the Government of Mexico City and Corporación Interamericana de Entretenimiento (CIE), promoter of the Mexican race, announced they have reached an agreement that will allow F1® to stay in Mexico City for a further three years.

The announcement was made by Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum – Mayor of Mexico City–, Mr. Chase Carey – Chairman & CEO of Formula 1® – and Mr. Alejandro Soberón – President & CEO of CIE – during which it was confirmed the FORMULA 1 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX™ will take place at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez from 2020 until 2022.

Alejandro Soberón stated: “I want to deeply thank Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum and the Government of Mexico City for their leadership in acknowledging Formula 1’s social and economic value, and for bringing together different businessmen, through a trust, to help complete the investment needed for the project.”

“At CIE, we remain committed to promoting and operating the highest quality events in the world. Through this international platform, we have the opportunity to showcase the diverse cultural wealth of this fantastic city. We look forward to welcoming the thousands of tourists to this award-winning event. In addition, we will continue to support the development of the local economy; the 2018 edition alone generated an economic impact of over $739 million USD and more than 8 thousand jobs linked to the tourism industry,” said Soberón.

He added: “Finally, I want to thank the Formula 1 fans both domestic and foreign, without a doubt – your energy and passion has made our Grand Prix a very unique and special experience”.

Chase Carey, Chairman and CEO, Formula 1®, said: “We are pleased to have renewed our partnership with Mexico City, which will now host the FORMULA 1 MEXICO CITY GRAND PRIX until at least 2022.  Ever since it returned to the championship calendar in 2015, this event has always proved to be amazingly popular with the public and fans, not just in Mexico, but also around the world. Proof of this is the fact that the race promoter has won the FIA award for the “Best Event” no fewer than four years in a row and, in those four years, over 1,3 million spectators have attended the Grand Prix. The Grand Prix has also been an important economic driver for the city, reinforcing its credentials as a centre for tourism. I would like to thank the Mayor, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum, and the entire government of Mexico City for all their efforts in ensuring that Formula 1® continues in Mexico and I look forward to seeing another big crowd of fans at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez from 25 to 27 October for the FORMULA 1 GRAN PREMIO DE MEXICO 2019.”

Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Mayor of Mexico City, emphasized that the permanence of Formula 1® in the city was achieved for the first time through a new financing model in which public resources are not used; previously, the Federal Government collaborated with the funding for the event.

Sheinbaum Pardo said that on this occasion Mexico City’s Government was a promoter for the creation of a private trust that would raise the investment needed for the event.

F1® will return to Mexico on October 25, 26 and 27 for the 2019 edition of the Mexican Grand Prix at the historic Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
