Time for the Mexican Grand Prix!

Mexico City October 26, 2016.

Time for the Mexican Grand Prix!

It’s been a long wait but the 2016 Mexican Grand Prix is now just a few days away. In Austin, Texas last week the F1 folk were all looking forward to making the short hop to Mexico City. Here’s what three people had to say about it, starting with the legend that is Niki Lauda, the boss of the AMG Mercedes F1 team.

“Last year’s race was the best I’ve ever seen in all my life – the best, honestly, what they have produced here. The way they organised it, the way it happened, the whole crowd is going with it and that’s it. Unbelievable. You could feel the crowd on the grid. Everything worked – the cars, the people, the drivers. It was a perfect interlink, and that’s why the race was so successful. The magic is the Mexicans, the magic are the organisers who made this happen. The way they organised the spectator places, for me it was the best I’ve ever seen, and then the podium right in front of all the people. Formula 1 got back to where you could feel it and touch it, and I think this was the most important thing. How close the spectators can get to watch the cars, I think it’s outstanding. I am sure they can maintain this level for this year too because the basics are right.”

Andy Stevenson, Team Manager for Sergio Perez’s Force India team.

“I had been to the Mexican GPs in ‘91 and ‘92 which was a long time ago so it’s very difficult for me to remember it from them. What I remember from Mexico last year was how much everything had improved. The city to me had changed. It was far more vibrant and a lot of fun. The traffic had improved, I thought the traffic was better than in the past and the bad air we used to experience seemed to be a thing of the past. The atmosphere was amazing. Everybody saw what happened with the way they’ve used the old baseball stadium, it was just magnificent. I could recognise bits of how the paddock used to be in the past but it had changed so much

“The crowd were unbelievable. It’s a fantastic event. For the team, having Checo on our team means the crowd are really supporting us and the crowd is like a twelfth player at football for us on our side. It does give us a lift.”

Paul Weaver, leading English journalist for the respected Guardian daily newspaper.

“I had never been to Mexico before and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, particularly the circuit, which I think surprised everyone in terms of the atmosphere. Formula 1 was returning to a country that really appeared to have a hunger and an appetite and excitement for it and I was really blown away by the whole weekend.”
